Plan for Moving Day

Plan for Moving Day

We all know moving day can be stressful! Planning for moving day can reduce the stress associated with moving.  These are just a few tips to guide you in preparing for your moving day.  Please call A “Sharp” Moving Company  at (903) 786-2321  for more information about our moving & storage services.

Planning A move date

First, determine what day you need to move.  Remember to allow for bad weather because movers generally will not work during heavy rain, ice, or snow.  For example, If you need to be out of your current home by the 25th then consider scheduling your move a few days before the 25th.  This will allow extra time in case of bad weather or for cleaning your current home before the new owner’s take possession.

Stay in contact with your realtor.  Closing issues can always arise at the last minute.  By communicating with your realtor, you can keep informed on the timeline of your closing date.  When closing on two homes (the one you are selling & the one you are buying) they may have a time lapse.  If a situation such as this occurs, we can store your household goods in one of our temperature controlled storage units for you until you close on the other home.  If we move & store your goods, we can provide you with an inventory of goods stored at our location.  Please visit our storage website, www.289storage.com.

Getting A Moving estimate

It’s always good to get a moving estimate on the cost of moving and the details of the charges.  We can give you an estimate online, in-person, or over the phone.  Visit our website, www.asharpmoving.com, or call us at (903)786-2321.

When you call to get a moving estimate give as many details as you can to the person giving you the estimate. Discuss any extraordinary items like pianos, gun safes, pool tables, or extremely awkward or heavy items you may need moved.  Tell your mover if you have stairs, inclined driveway, low hanging trees, curves, or any other obstacles.  You can also provide a list of furniture and boxes needing moved or the square footage.  Remember, the more details the closer the estimate.  Please visit my blog about how to get a good moving estimate

More importantly, when you get a moving estimate ask the company for their state license number.  If you are moving within the state of Texas they should be able to provide you with their TXDOT #.  If you are moving across state lines, ask them for their USDOT#.  Also, ask them if they will be providing you with moving contract.   A “Sharp” Moving Company’s numbers are TXDOT#006317178C and USDOT#1291990. We also provide an official moving contract.

If you need to store some or all of your goods, please let us know because we do have temperature controlled storage units.  If we store your goods, we can provide you with an inventory of goods stored at our location.  Please visit our storage website, www.289storage.com.

Full Replacement Value vs. Standard liability

Do you want full replacement value for your goods in case of damage?  If so, let your mover know the day you call to get a moving estimate.  There is a premium and a deductible involved with full replacement protection for your goods.  Regardless, all licensed movers have a standard liability of 0.60 cents per pound per article when moving your goods unless stated otherwise.  For more information,  call A “Sharp” Moving Company at (903)786-2321 or visit our website at www.asharpmoving.com. I have another article about Full replacement vs. standard liability, if you want to know more.

How do You Prepare for Moving Day?

Let People Know.

Tell your family & friends that you are moving and share your new address.  Let your neighbors know in advance, in case the movers need to park in a specific area that may affect them. Make a list & call all utility (water, electric, phone, ,cable, etc) companies to turn off old utilities and set up new utilities.  Put in a change of address with the post office.  Notify all credit card companies & banks.  Tell your employer if needed.

Pack your boxes.

Now its a week before your move and what should you be doing to prepare for your move?  You could go through and clean out your closets and pantry and donate things you no longer need to a local donation center.  Even if you have furniture to dispose of a lot of the donation centers will pick it up for you.

Next, purchase some packing materials like boxes, tape, packing paper, etc.  Now its time to pack your boxes!   Tape all boxes shut so when the movers load your boxes they do not spill.  Please visit my blog for detailed tips on packing your boxes

Don’t have time to pack? Give us a call at (903)786-2321 for a free packing estimate. You are also welcome to read a few of our packing tips on our website.

What to do on moving day?

Before the movers Arrive

It’s now your moving day, what should you do before we arrive?  There are a few things to do the morning of your move.  First, make sure all your furry friends are safe and secure. Inform our movers when they arrive if your furry friends are in a room and if the door needs to stay closed in case you don’t have a cage. Second, make sure to put away anything you do not want moved or things we cannot move (money, cell phone, purse, prescriptions, etc) .  Also, verify cars or other objects are not blocking your driveways and entrances.

When the Movers Arrive

Walk through your home and show our crew the items being moved to your new home.  More than one delivery or pickup location?  Just let them know which pieces go to each location during the walk through.  Once the walk through is complete, one of our crew members will explain the moving contract and have you sign in the appropriate places and give you a copy of the contract.

If you have family and friends coming by,  please try and have them visit with you in an area free of movers.  We want to make sure everyone is safe and that we don’t have to interrupt your visit.

During the Move

During the move, what are you suppose to be doing? If you have any questions or concerns please discuss them with our crew lead.  Before we leave your current home, make sure we have loaded everything you want moved to the new location.

When we arrive at your new home make sure all driveways are clear.  While we unload, please arrange for someone to point out where you want your furniture and boxes placed in each room.  If we disassembled an item on the load end, we will put it back together at the new location. Now, the crew lead will figure your bill, collect, and provide you with a copy of your contract. Tips for the crew are always welcome.

Celebrate, relax, & enjoy your new home!  Congratulations!!
