To get a good moving estimate- Provide this information to your mover
Try to provide your moving company with as many details as you can give about your move. The more details the easier it is to give a good estimate. Here are a few questions I like to ask when I give a moving estimate:
When are you planning on moving?
Before calling to get an estimate, you need to determine what day you need to move. Remember to allow for bad weather because movers generally will not work during heavy rain, ice, or snow. For example, if you need to be out of your current home by the 25th then consider scheduling your move a few days before the 25th. This will allow extra time in case of bad weather or for cleaning your current home before the new owner’s take possession.
Book your move in plenty of time! Depending on the season, we usually like for customers to book as soon as they know their moving date.
Is your Moving estimate for a local or long distance move?
We charge an hourly rate when moving someone locally. Local moves are usually under 150 miles away. Please let us know if you have more than one stop to move goods from or to so we can provide you with a good moving estimate.
If you need a storage unit, we now offer temperature controlled storage units in various sizes. Please visit our storage website, www.289storage.com.
For long distance moves we provide you an estimate over the phone just so you have an idea of the cost. Then we will need to set up a time to meet with you in person. This allows us to see the goods and make sure we have all the details needed in getting you a set price for your long-distance move.
What type is your current and future home?
Is your current home or future home a one- or two- story home, storage unit, or apartment? This information helps us determine what size crew we will use in moving your goods. It also helps us give you a good estimate of time and cost of your move.
I also like to ask about your driveway at each location. A steep driveway or obstacles (trees, curves, gates, etc.) can make a difference in the time we estimate for your move.
We can also move and pack your office. Generally, we like to come and look at office moves in person. We can also discuss the details over the phone.
Do you have any specialty or extraordinary pieces?
Some specialty items do incur additional charges. They may require special equipment, extra time, or special handling. Examples of specialty items include safes, pool tables, pianos, exercise stations, etc. Use your best judgement and disclose any items you think may be considered a specialty item.
Can you provide a list of furniture or your homes square footage?
Providing a detailed list of furniture always helps us to give a good moving estimate. If you haven’t prepared a list, you can always provide your homes square footage. If your home is listed on for sale on realtor or Zillow, we can scroll through the pictures of your home with you.
Do you need us to pack your boxes for you?
If you don’t have time to pack your boxes, please let us know because we offer excellent packing services. We generally like to see your home in person to give a packing estimate. This way we can determine the materials we will need to pack your household goods. Give us a call at (903)786-2321 to schedule a packing estimate!
Ask your mover these Questions
You should always ask questions to learn more about the moving company you are getting an estimate from.
When getting a Moving Estimate ask the mover if they are licensed.
More importantly, to get a good moving estimate make sure the moving company is licensed. Ask the company for their state license number. If you are moving within the state of Texas they should be able to provide you with their TXDOT #. If you are moving across state lines, ask them for their USDOT#. A “Sharp” Moving Company’s numbers are TXDOT#006317178C and USDOT#1291990. Being a licensed mover means the moving company carries the amounts of insurance that the state requires.
Will they be providing you with moving contract?
We provide an official moving contract approved by the state of Texas. Our contract lists: our company information, hourly rate or set price, methods of payment, our start and stop time, addresses associated with your move. It also shows the options of liability you select for your move. We ask you to sign at the beginning of the move showing that you agree to the details on the moving contract. Once signed, we give you a copy to keep with you when your goods are in transit. Then once the move is complete, we will fill in information and calculate your bill. We will ask you to sign showing we have completed your move and give you a final copy of the moving contract.
What time will they be arriving at your home on moving day?
We generally start our moves first thing in the morning between 8 and 9 am. This may be different for other moving companies. Of course, we can start at whatever time is convenient for you.
If we see the weather is calling for storms or bad weather, we will contact you. If we do have bad weather the day of your move and have to call it off, we simply move you to the next day. We don’t like to inconvenience anyone. However, we don’t want to get your goods wet or most importantly we don’t want anyone getting hurt.
What amount of liability do they provide for my furniture and boxes?
A household goods mover’s standard liability is 60 cents per pound per article. This typically covers scratches or minor damage. However, you can purchase full replacement value for your goods. There is a premium and a deductible associated with full replacement value. Please call, A Sharp Moving Company, for more details.
Can they provide an inventory of your goods, if needed?
Most moving companies provide an inventory on long distance moves. However, you need to tell your moving company that you want an inventory of goods. If it is a local move, most movers do not do an inventory unless it is requested.
There you have it! A list of information to provide or inquire about in order to get a good moving estimate from a licensed moving company.
